Xylene, toluene, white spirit and naphtha-C: what differs?

Understand solvent families and ask the right questions before selecting an industrial grade.

Compare references, not just names

These products belong to solvent families that are not interchangeable by default. Selection depends on formulation, process and commercial grade. The table gives identification pointers, not substitution recommendations.

ProductIdentification pointerWhat to specify
XyleneAromatic solvent; mixed isomers or a specific referenceExact composition and grade
TolueneAn aromatic solvent distinct from xyleneSpecification and approved application
White SpiritHydrocarbon mixture, depending on gradeComposition and grade profile
Naphtha-CA name requiring a precise supplier referenceCut, specifications and documentation

Start with your process

Your technical team can specify the properties that matter: required solvency, evaporation behaviour, composition, aromatic content or other acceptance criteria. A broad application such as paint or cleaning is not sufficient to select a compatible product.

Validate any change

To assess a replacement, provide documentation for the product currently used and your acceptance criteria. Approval belongs to the relevant technical team. A lower purchase price alone is insufficient if a change affects process performance or operating constraints.

Specify the naphtha-C reference

Naphtha covers different hydrocarbon cuts. For a product described as naphtha-C, request the exact supplier reference and documents. Do not automatically equate that name with another cut or a similarly named branded product.

Further references

International documentary references. Requirements for your operation and documentation for the grade offered still need verification.
